David & Jan Boan

Janice and David Boan, an Australian couple, live in Perth, the capital city of the state of Western Australia.

They have been married for 44 years and have five children and 18 grand-children. Throughout this time, they have been teaching the Lord’s Word among Christians.

After David was ordained in 1967, he served in two Anglican parishes and a School Chaplaincy in Melbourne. They trained for missionary service but after health issues prevented them going overseas, they taught in a community at the Montrose House and later took the parish of St. Jude’s Carlton for seven years. Moving to Perth in Western Australia in 1981, David cared for the Anglican parish of St Alban’s in Highgate for seven years.

In 1988, they left the Anglican scene to teach into scattered and smaller groups of Christians in some Australian towns. Later the work extended into the UK, Italy, and India throughout 1995-2000.

At the beginning of 2012, in concert with others, their work became more accessible at the York St Silo, at 4 York Street in North Perth. It is here that David and Jan share the work of the putting forth of God’s Word.

The focus of this website is the immediate work at the Silo. The courses with their pre-reading appear on this site to be downloaded ahead of the meeting times. This website carries a link to www.thegraciousgod.net, where past teaching series may be downloaded to listen to on mp3 along with their reading notes.

Sunday Exposition

Minimize

Sunday Exposition, 3-5pm on a Sunday, beginning February 12th.

An intense probe of Galatians, in the form of a workshop, for the first part. It will teach the ways and means we can use to extract from the Scripture those matters which concerned the apostolic writers.
The second part will apply, and bring that work to a strong expression for today. What is it  that God would say to us here and now? Then a time of response and thanksgiving will follow. This is not a church service. Bring to it a desire to hear the Lord, firstly for "us" and them for "yourself".

The course:
Our first priority is that each person read through the Old Testament itself. This maximises our exposure to the Holy Spirit to speak to us and to form our own convictions about the revelation of God. The basic load of Bible reading is roughly 25 chapters per week.
We work chronologically through the Old Testament. This allows us to have the narrative clearly in order and is the foundation to understanding how the Lord has, through His covenant life with Israel, formed a progressive revelation that culminates in Jesus the Messiah.
We look at the integration of the history, geography, and archaeology of the period.
We lay foundation studies in creation, covenant, salvation through judgment, the priests, the law of Moses as a way of life, Deuteronomy, the settlement of the land, the period under the Judges and the kinsman-redeemer of Ruth.
Readings for this course may be followed on line. Some of the material for each week, will be posted for download in advance. And the recordings of the presentations, but not always all the discussion, will be available on mp3 to down load as it come available.

[This course can be joined at any week of the term, whenever you become aware of it.]

The course:
Our first priority is that each person read through the small sections set in the Gospels; about 30 per week. The Guide is posted on the right hand side of this home page. This is a careful study about the way the Gospel writers present the life, ministry and teaching of Jesus throughout Galilee before He begins to turn towards Jerusalem.
This allows us to have the narrative clearly in order and is the foundation to understanding how the Lord has brought the kingdom of God in His own person.
We major on the way in which the God-man has come to us for our salvation. How, in his own person, He lives, dies and is resurrected for us and ascends into heaven, also for us. We do major studies on the pre-existent life of the Word of God, his Incarnation, Baptism, Temptation, the call of the disciples and his teaching to them. We learn how to recognise the “gospel” in the Gospels.

Readings for this course may be followed on line. Some of the material for each week, will be posted for download in advance. And the recordings of the presentations, but not always all the discussion, will be available on mp3 to down load as it come available.

We meet for a two-hour session once a week and work through the BBG Grammar. The course work is centres around exercises that are completed in the workbook, so it is necessary to buy both of these books.
From time to time, we shall supplement the exercises taken from other older grammars. BBG divides into 36 chapters. Our first term takes us through the Introduction and the Noun system of the language.
We shall also work through some selected texts from the Greek New Testament. This enriches our thinking and begins to teach us to prepare for the exegesis of the text. Associated skills, the use of lexicons and how to discover the best from word studies in Greek are also introduced.

Who Do We Think We Are?

A series of readings looking at those who have gone before us in our Christian faith

Times:
Once a month on the 3rd Friday of the month, beginning on 17th February at 10am -12 noon at 4 York Street, North Perth.
What to do?
Register with Barbara 0428 504 591, landline 08 9450 4591, email barbcoker@iinet.net.au
and come on Friday  17th February to 4 York St, North Perth.
[This course can be joined at any week of the term, whenever you become aware of it.]
The course:
The history of the church of Jesus Christ covers a huge span of time and development of thought. The church has had a profound effect on the history of the human race.
To try to cover this entirely is an impossible task. God has raised up different people at different times in history to meet the questions of their day and to keep the testimony of Jesus true.
However, to even have a glimpse of some part of this glorious story deepens our understanding of the foundations on which our lives are built today. It may serve to support our present thinking but it also may challenge us to see things differently. Whatever way, we learn much.

The aim is to study our history by looking at significant people from the church’s beginning  under apostolic leadership to the ‘fathers’ of the Christian faith who followed them. We will consider the life of the person, what was happening at that time in the secular world outside the community of believers, as well as the crucial issues faced within the community itself. As we do this, we will see similar issues that affect us today.

As we meet, some members of the group, who would wish to, will read different parts of the material provided and then bring summaries to the next meeting to share what they have read with the others.
Jan Boan will coordinate the readings for the session and David will bring insights into the theological implications of the persons’ work and times. The readings will cover the writings of the people as well as refer to relevant Biblical passages. They will be posted a month before the relevant meeting. It is a course rich in our Christian forebears; not just dates and facts.
